The research program of the Department of Horticulture is diverse, encompassing both applied and basic investigations. The research program involves 15 faculty and numerous support staff, with faculty and facilities located not only at the Fayetteville campus, but also at the Fruit Substation near Clarksville and the Vegetable Substation near Alma. Other locations for research are the Southeast Research and Extension Center at Monticello, and the Southwest Research and Extension Center at Hope along with sites on farms and golf courses and in commercial nurseries and greenhouses.
The goal of the applied research program is to support and enhance the Arkansas horticultural industries. These commodity-oriented research programs focus in the areas of cultivar development and culture/physiology of fruit and vegetable crops, turfgrass management, ornamental plant development and landscape management, and greenhouse crop management. Cultivar evaluations are conducted within these commodity areas.
Basic research is conducted in the area of nutraceutical determinations of horticultural crops, genetic engineering of plants to produce pharmaceutical proteins, and in seed physiology.
A major component of the research program of the Department involves graduate student research. Fifteen to 20 graduate students enrolled in MS or PhD (Plant Science) programs are conducting investigations in the various areas as outlined above.
Research findings are disseminated in numerous ways, including professional journal articles, presentations at professional meetings, grower newsletters and meetings, trade journals and other industry-related outlets. The Horticultural Studies Research Series is published annually by the Department providing recent results from numerous horticultural investigations.
