Professional Activities:
To develop and incorporate rice germplasm into new long-grain rice varieties for Arkansas rice producers, with increased stable grain and milling yields, desirable plant type (traditional and semidwarf) and greater disease resistance, improved processing, cooking, eating and nutritional characteristics, and collaborate on management practices for new variety releases.
Responsibilities of the above positions include:
* To discover and develop improved rice germplasm with higher yield potential, increased grain and milling yield stability, better grain quality, desirable plant type, greater pest resistance or tolerance especially for disease, and improved processing, cooking, and nutritional characteristics for the development of new rice varieties.
* To release commercial rice varieties from improved rice germplasm for Arkansas, U.S. and global rice production.
* To conduct a comprehensive rice performance-testing program of established and novel rice lines in all major rice-producing areas of Arkansas.
* To discover, develop, improve and utilize appropriate genetic breeding methods to enhance germplasm production and evaluation.
* To maintain the purity of breeder and foundation rice seed for all rice varieties produced by the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.
* To provide expertise for all other rice research projects within Arkansas including fertility, DD50, USDA/ARS, pathology, entomology, economic and quality programs.
* To provide expertise and support for Cooperative Extension Service education programs and publications including grower meetings, fact sheets, the Rice Production Handbook and Arkansas Rice Performance Trials.
