Biology and Management of Rice Insect Pests
John Bernhardt

Objective: Provide Arkansas rice farmers with viable options to manage insect pests in rice.

* Evaluate the efficacy of new insecticides and provide the best rate and timing of application for optimum effectiveness of registered insecticides.
* Provide input into the rice breeding program by evaluation of advanced rice lines for susceptibility to rice stink bug, rice water weevil, rice stalk borer, and other pests.
* Evaluate the impact of cultural practices on rice insect pests.
* Provide treatment thresholds for rice insect pests.
* Examine the biology and ecology of insect pests as related to rice and other host plants.
* Examine the interaction between insect pests and biological control agents.

Rice production in the U.S. can be affected by many factors that reduce productivity. One of the factors is insect pests such as the rice water weevil, rice stink bug, grape colaspis, and rice stalk borer.

Insect pests contribute to revenue losses directly by either reducing grain yield and/or quality of the grain, or indirectly by reducing stand density and/or by delaying crop maturity. Therefore, a knowledge of pest ecology, sampling, methods of damage assessment, and control by cultural practices and chemicals are an essential part of rice production.

Information from this project is of value to Arkansas rice growers and growers in other rice producing states in the U.S.
