Charles E. (Chuck) Wilson
Extension Agronomist, Rice
cwilson@uaex.edu

Research Overview

As the state rice agronomist for Arkansas, my role is to provide educational training and support to County Extension Agents and producers that enhances sustainable rice production, improves profitability and competitiveness of rice producers, and improves the water, air and soil environmental quality, for the purpose of allowing Arkansas producers to continue serving as a national leader in rice production. This is to be accomplished through delivery of production updates, fact sheets, information sheets, and computer-assisted management programs that allow producers to make informed decisions in the production of rice in Arkansas.

I also provide direction for the Rice Research Verification Program, which is coordinated by Mr. Jeff Branson.

The Rice DD50 Program is a computer-driven tool that predicts when the rice will reach various growth stages based on 30-year weather averages. Thresholds for new varieties are added as they are released based on research conducted at the Rice Research and Extension Center. Growers can enroll in the DD50 program by either contacting their local county Extension Office or via internet at http://dd50.uaex.edu/dd50Logon.asp

Cooperators at other locations include:
Dr. Rick Norman
Dr. Nathan Slaton
Dr. Rick Cartwright

Research areas include:
Phosphorus nutrition of rice
Nitrogen nutrition of rice
Other fertility-related issues
On-Farm Testing of Commercial Rice Varieties
Agronomic Production Issues (Seeding Dates, Seeding Rates, etc.)

Information on Rice Production Recommendations for Arkansas producers can be found at the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service Rice Homepage at http://www.aragriculture.org/cropsoilwtr/rice/default.asp
