Breeding and genetics of wheat and canola

Tests of advanced wheat lines are conducted at the Vegetable Substation. These trials are meaningful to help determine the adaptation of these lines to the Arkansas River Valley soils. Testing includes selecting for yield potential, test weight, and disease resistance. The canola breeding program utilizes the Vegetable Substation to evaluate early generation as well as advanced lines. Trials are conducted to determine adaptation to Arkansas, and to provide cultural information for the crop. Canola testing focuses on developing canola germplasm that has high yield potential, disease resistance, and oil quality parameters to meet industry standards. Data collect at the Vegetable Substation is utilized in the release of new cultivars and germplasm for both the wheat and canola breeding programs.

Small-grain cultivar performance tests are conducted each year to provide information to companies developing cultivars and/or marketing seed within the state. These trials aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating cultivar recommendations for small-grain producers. The Vegetable Substation location is used to evaluate cultivars for their adaptation to the soil types of the Arkansas River Valley.
