PLANT DISEASE RESEARCH AT KIBLER
Spinach: Research on plant pathogens and disease management of spinach is conducted at Kibler. Disease management efforts focus on breeding for disease resistance (conducted in cooperation with Dr. Teddy Morelock), chemical disease control trials, and chemical alternatives to disease control (surfactants). Diseases of particular interest at the Kibler station include white rust, caused by Albugo occidentalis, anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum dematiu, Fusarium wilt of seedlings and mature plants, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Spinaciae, and damping off pathogens including Pythium sp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Phytophthora sp. Additional research efforts have focused on characterizing the genetic and molecular diversity of these pathogens along with the epidemiology of disease development. |
