Epidemiology and management of wheat diseases
Dr. Gene Milus
Department of Plant Pathology
gmilus@uark.edu

The facilities and environment at the Vegetable Substation are conducive for a variety of wheat disease research. Current projects include evaluation of varieties and selection of breeding lines for resistance to Fusarium head blight, leaf rust, Septoria leaf blotch, Stagonospora blotch, and barley yellow dwarf. A graduate student is evaluating a set of wheat varieties to determine the identity of genes for adult-plant resistance to leaf rust. A study was initiated in 2000 to determine if new races of the stripe rust fungus cause more disease than older races. Results of these studies help wheat growers select disease-resistant varieties for planting, help breeders develop varieties with better resistance, and provide data for improving disease management recommendations.
