Herbicide evaluation trials are conducted each season at the Vegetable Substation. This location is a representative of a large area of Arkansas and surrounding states where vegetables are grown. In order that our growers remain competitive with those in other regions, we must develop more efficient strategies of weed control for our region. In these trials, new herbicides and combinations of herbicides are evaluated in the various commercial crops or our region such as: spinach, collards, kale, mustard, turnip greens, southern peas, snapbean, watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, and squash. Data are collected on crop tolerance and control efficacy for our more troublesome weeds. These data are then made available to various manufacturers and suppliers of herbicide products, the IR-4 (National Program for the Registration of Pesticides For Minor Uses), and regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Arkansas State Plant Board. These studies contribute to the approval process by these federal and state agencies and subsequent distribution and sales of labeled herbicide products for our growers.
